Day 2 in Cairns – Fishing on a boat

11 JUNE 2022

We went fishing in Trinity inlet. Our boat captain was Captain Russ. He was friendly and wise. We set off as soon as a safety briefing was done. We started our journey on the water slowly, then, we began to gain speed when we were in the middle of the sea.

We went to a creepy river to get our baits. The area did not have a single visitor except for us (unless you count the baits). That river was a nice flowing stream with greenish water and tall, bent trees that made it look creepy. There was a tiny stream that extended from that river and had its entrance blocked by a fallen tree. We caught some small fishes there for the baits. After catching some small fishes, we decided to catch some prawns. Thereafter, we went to a similar river to get some prawns as the fishes liked those the most.

Bait ranking:

  1. live prawns (recommended)
  2. dead prawns
  3. live shrimps
  4. dead shrimps
  5. live small fishes
  6. dead small fishes
  7. any other small seafood that is fresh
  8. canned seafood
  9. fish food
  10. microscopic animals that live underwater

When we got the baits we needed, like prawns and tiny fishes, we began to gain speed again to get to our next destination, Trinity inlet. On the way, we saw a lazy crocodile sunbathing and a heron that was scooping up some fish.

This was not what I expected as it was like a roller coaster on the sea. We were looking at different animals and this roller coaster was free! I loved it! When we reached there, we began to set up the fishing rods. First, we hooked the tiny fishes to test it out. Second, we threw the hook into the sea and secured the end to the rod holder. We waited and waited, but we had no luck. The fishes were all so clever, eating the baits without getting hooked.

We decided to try our secret weapon: prawns. After we set the hook with the prawn, we got a few tugs almost immediately. We were all extremely excited as we could not wait to see what fish we had caught. After all, we had been fishing for more than an hour. Captain Russ rolled the hook up to see what fish we had caught. It was a Moses Sprout!!! The magnificently marvelous fish wriggled gently on Captain Russ’s hand. It had shiny silver scales and pale yellow and grey fins. It looked extremely elegant. In fact, its eyes were twinkling as if they were saying hello to me.

After our captain let the fish go, he hooked another prawn onto that hook. After a few more minutes, he told us to retrieve the rods so that we could try somewhere else.

Soon, we reached another part of Trinity inlet to continue fishing. After an hour, we still had no luck. We went back to Cairns, satisfied with the journey.

The other Dutch tourist who came with us on this fishing trip bid us goodbye and we waved back to him. It was an enjoyable afternoon fishing trip. We went for an evening stroll along Cairns Marina and Esplanade as our hotel was nearby. When we arrived at our hotel, we enjoyed our free drinks with compliments from the hotel. It was a great day out at sea.
